What Comes After
the Diagnosis?
I pick up where the doctors tend to leave off, offering a non-clinical and care-centric perspective on dementia.
Often, caregivers leave a doctor's office with more questions than answers. Sometimes we are frustrated and overwhelmed because our loved one has "performed" well during the appointment and the issues that we experience at home the doctor never sees.
It's not that doctors don't care. Doctors are busy, and unless someone has been a caregiver to a person with dementia, it can be difficult to fully relate to the day-to-day ups and downs and challenges dementia poses.
My range of experience - from the perspective of a family caregiver as well as the standpoint of a long term care professional - has given me a deep understanding of the dementia landscape. I have learned what works and doesn't, and how to augment medical expertise with the social, emotional and spiritual care that promotes overall wellbeing.
I focus on patient-centered care. I work from a place of compassion and empathy, and carefully consider each person's needs, desires, preferences, and cultural background; as well as their basic human rights, when crafting an approach. I work in full compliance with doctors and medical personnel, and co-create a care plan involving the individual with dementia, family, and the broader care team.
While the dementia journey is not without its challenges, it is also not without its joy.
I can help you access the joy.
